Solid Waste Management of Upper-Savo has a role of co-ordinating the waste management in Upper-Savo. It concentrates more and more on recycling and technical treatment of waste. The number of community landfills before 1997 was 8, today only 1 is in use (Waste treatment centre, Peltomäki, Iisalmi), which is operated by Waste Management of Upper-Savo. The 7 municipal landfills in the area have been closed.
